Quadrilaterals... What's up with the Trapezoid anyway?

This month we are looking at classifying quadrilaterals during calendar math, one day at a time. Recently, there has been some "dispute" over what qualifies as a trapezoid these days. For the purposes of 4th grade math, the county has decided to go with the definition that a quadrilateral qualifies as a trapezoid if it has AT LEAST on set of parallel sides. This is a departure from the former definition that a trapezoid had ONLY one set of parallel sides.

Elementary math teachers everywhere are buzzing ...

Mrs. Fagnano shared this video with me and I hope it might help clarify some of the confusion. I will be sharing it with the class this week.
