Multiplication Strategies - The Box Method

In the 4th grade we are exploring different strategies for multiplying numbers with multiple digits. One of the strategies we have explored is the "Box Method." The strategies they are using today are building up to a level of understanding that will enable them to utilize the standard algorithm that many of us learned when we were in school. So hang in there, Mom and Dad, we haven't abandoned the standard algorithm. We are just working our way up to it. This video is accurate and a good representation of the way we use the box method in class - I would only add that when students are multiplying by a number that ends in zeros, we aren't just "slapping on a zero" we are multiplying by 10! 8 x 40 translates to :

8 x 4 = 32 and 32 x 10 is 320. We want to be very careful about using terminology like "Just add a zero to it" because, mathematically, we are NOT adding zero, but multiplying by 10. Keep your eye on this blog for more strategies!
